PDA Toolbox Professional Site Closure
Now that Palm's webOS is to become the next
platform for Palm, PDA Toolbox for the
Palm OS is heading into retirement.
I have always maintained that we would stay open until the 'Last Palm OS
device was sold' and I hope that I've stayed true to that statement.
It is obvious that the direction Palm is headed is for a Palm OS-less
environment.
So
PDAToobox.org and it's forums and
software links are going to remain open until
September 30th, 2009
-- the end of my hosting contract. However, the forums and sales will be
closed to new users. At this time, I am not sure of the status of
PDAToolbox.com.
It has been a fun and interesting run. I think many of
us learned a lot of new things and met a lot of interesting people. I
know that careers were started and lives changed by folks stepping into
the world of PDA Toolbox! I think it has been real nice being part of
that.
Both Paul Anderson and I thank everyone who has
contributed to PDA Toolbox and the PDA Toolbox community.

Year of the Palm Pre?
I have to admit I have been pleasantly surprised at the CES
announcement of the Palm Pre. Of course, everyone has heard plenty
about it - and if you haven't, then you scoot on over to Engadget and read
Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About The Palm Pre. I
honestly didn't think Palm was going to make much of a splash. Now
all they have to do is actually pull it off with a flawless implementation
and release. For the last few years, Palm has had problems with
implementation so we'll see. I am crossing my fingers for them.
The development aspects of the Palm Pre are still be worked out.
Mostly it has been mentioned that Palm will only support applications
created with the WebOS "Mojo" library - apparently an Ajax
library similar to Apple's but with more low-level API's available.
There's a somewhat informative article at Ars called
The pre's got Mojo: a developer speaks about Palm's new SDK.
Hopefully this is just a phase 1, similar to Apple's, and that a native
application SDK will eventually be available.
So, who knows? Maybe this will be the year of the Palm Pre. Let's
keep our fingers crossed and root for Palm to succeed. There is a
lot of inertia to overcome (Apple, Sprint Only, Palm's recent reputation,
etc.) but it can only be a good thing to increase the competition in this
high-end mobile web space.

Happy New Year 2009!
It has been a long year. Palm has been rather busy, yet seemingly
not getting a whole lot of traction. There's a good summary at Palm
Infocenter called, of course,
2008 - The Palm OS Year in Review, with the saddest news being that
Palm intends to fully abandon the stand-alone (non-cellular) hand-held
market. It seems development at Palm has not stalled, as they seem
to have readied their "secret" project - the Nova OS - and will be
releasing it during a
Press Event at CES.
Anyway, as far as PDA Toolbox is concerned, we are currently in
"maintenance" mode, awaiting the news to be released at CES. Of
course, I have renewed the PDAToolbox.org domain and continue to operate
the support forums.
Spammers have continue to pummel me at the rate
of about 60 or more bogus forum user sign-ups a day if I open the forums
to new signups. So send me an email if you want to sign up for full
access to the forums.
So again, Happy New Year 2009!
:)
